A new health target, Raising Healthy Kids, has been launched from today.

The Raising Healthy Kids health target is one of two targeted interventions in the Childhood Obesity Plan that will reach at-risk young children and their families directly.

The new health target will see 95 percent of obese children identified in the Before School Check (B4 School Check) programme and offered a referral to a health professional for clinical assessment and family-based nutrition, activity and lifestyle interventions by December 2017.

The existing B4 School Check was selected as it focuses on early intervention to ensure positive, sustained effects on health. Children receive a comprehensive check before they start school and are referred to the services they need to support healthy eating and activity.

The new health target replaces the More Heart and Diabetes Checks target, which will continue to be monitored through DHB accountability measures, service coverage requirements and reporting processes.
