Cardiac Services

The South Island Cardiac Workstream provides regional leadership for the overarching national goal of improving access, equity and quality of care for people living with cardiovascular illness, as well as reducing the number of people dying prematurely of heart disease.

The Cardiac Workstream is focused on ensuring there is a planned and collaborative approach to cardiac services in the South Island particularly for patients with suspected Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS). The group is working on implementing common referral, prioritisation and condition management tools, which will help ensure patients have the same access to care and treatment no matter where they are in the region. Alongside this, work is also ongoing to reduce inequalities that exist in our communities in access to cardiac services.

As part of this work, the Workstream is focused on:

  • The South Island rollout of the national cardiac register ANZACS QI
  • Developing Guidelines for Essential Minimum Cardiac Facilities for South Island hospitals.
  • Developing pathways from primary to tertiary care for cardiac patients.
