The Te Waipounamu Māori Leadership Wānanga for Cancer 2011 was held at Murihiku Marae, Invercargill, on 2 December 2011. It was at this hui that the establishment of Te Waipounamu Māori Leadership Group was agreed.
The purpose of the rōpu is to ensure that Māori in Te Waipounamu have support to develop and promote priorities to reduce the incidence, impacts and inequalities with respect to cancer. The Māori Leadership Group will support a partnership and participation mechanism with the Southern Cancer Network. Meetings provide a forum where key strategic, operational and managerial issues relating to Regional Cancer Control activities can be discussed and actions agreed.
The Māori Leadership Group provides tikanga and kaupapa Māori advice and guidance to the activities of the Southern Cancer Network, and ensures that the reduction of inequalities remains a focus in all activities.
