Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQN) Orientation Framework

The nursing workforce of New Zealand continue to rely on recruitment of nurses with overseas training and experience. It is critical that internationally qualified nurses (IQNs) receive the support and orientation they need to be confident and competent through their transition to our health system. The South Island Nurse Executives of New Zealand group developed a resource to help with this orientation work based on Nursing Council of New Zealand advice and workplace needs.

Guidelines for Nursing Workforce Kaiāwhina Roles – July 2022

These guidelines were developed to support nursing/health care teams reviewing task allocation options for assistive roles within their teams.  The guidelines have been approved by South Island Nurse Executives of New Zealand.  Te Waipounamu Nursing Kaiāwhina Guideline 2022.

Guidance for Chairing a Meeting has been developed as an introduction to what chairing a meeting involves, what makes a good chair and some useful tips and advice to keep your meeting effective and efficient. Everyone is busy and an effectively run meeting is an efficient way to get things done quickly, to support building a team and to enable collaboration to ensure the best outcomes are achieved.

Chairing a meeting is like any other skill, it involves some learning and then practise, practise, practise!


South Island Guide to Handling Concerns about the health of a Nurse

This guide has been developed by the Sustaining the Nursing Workforce group for South Island Workforce Development Hub (SIWDH). It aims to be a practical guide for South Island nursing managers in managing health concerns that may be impacting on practice. It is designed to complement but not replace local guidelines and advice from occupational health and human resource departments. It encompasses the management of health concerns in the workplace whether or not they are impacting on the performance of the nurse.

The South Island Guide to Handling Concerns about the health of a Nurse includes illustrative case studies form a variety of practice settings. Whilst these are based on the experience of the group that compiled the guide they are fictional and as such have been given fictional names based on local South Island towns.


South Island Rostering Guidelines for Nursing and Midwifery

An effective nursing and midwifery workforce is essential to the provision of health services to the community. To support the delivery of effective care the employing organisation must support safe and healthy rostering practices for the nursing and midwifery workforce.

The South Island Rostering Guidelines for Nursing and Midwifery outlines some principles and guidelines which support safe and healthy rostering. The responsibility to achieve this lies both with the employing organisation and the individual nurse and midwife.

Le Va
Le Va is committed to growing a qualified, flexible and sustainable Pacific health workforce, and supporting the mainstream health workforce to be more responsive to the needs of Pacific people. They have developed a Pacific cultural competency training programme – the Engaging Pasifika (EP) programme focuses primarily on the basic and essential cultural skills and knowledge required to work effectively with Pacific service users and their families.
